Bio/hist_note-

The National University Extension Association [NUEA] was formed in March, 1915 at a meeting of extension  deans and directors at the University of Wisconsin in Madison.  A  number of extension educators had talked about a desire to share  ideas and problems, and, after some delays, Dean Louis Reber of  the University of Wisconsin organized the meeting and became the  Association's first president. In 1980, the organization changed  its name to the National University Continuing Education  Association [NUCEA], largely because many members felt the term "extension" was too narrow to describe their programs.

Summry_descrip-

The founding members of National University Extension Association [NUEA] included twenty-two institutions:  eighteen were land-grant universities and four were private  institutions. Dean Louis Reber (Univ. of Wisconsin) was elected  the first president. [ source: Rohfeld, Rae]  The  organization adopted its first constitution and bylaws at its 1916 meeting at the University of Chicago. The Association's stated purpose was the  "establishment of an official and authorized organization through which colleges and universities and individuals engaged in educational extension work may confer for their mutual advantage and for the development and promotion of the best ideals, methods, and standards for the interpretation and dissemination of the accumulated knowledge of the race to all who desire to share in its benefits." [source: Stanley J. Drazek, et.al. EXPANDING  HORIZONS ... CONTINUING EDUCATION. Washington D.C.: National  University Extension Association, 1965.]  Membership was by  institution only, and annual meetings were held for the mutual sharing and learning of the deans and directors. Other concerns  of the members over the years were defining extension, developing a standard nomenclature, establishing standards, and promoting  public policies that would support extension activities.
