MEMBERSHIP RECORDS OF THE UNITARIAN CHURCH OF THE MESSIAH, NOW THE MAY MEMORIAL UNITARIAN SOCIETY OF SYRACUSE SINCE ITS ORGANIZATION IN 1838

(The dates which appeared on available file cards do not necessarily mean this person was taken into the membership on that date.  It means they were present and signed the register. Not all church members actually signed “the book,” our membership document. Thanks to members of the Syracuse Genealogical Society for their efforts in compiling membership information for our first one hundred years.)

UNITARIAN CONGREGATIONAL SOCIETY IN SYRACUSE NY

CHURCH OF THE MESSIAH

Sept 3, 1838

We the undersigned, professing our belief in Jesus Christ, the Son of God, and the Saviour of the world; in the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments as containing the revelation of God to man, and as a sufficient rule of faith and practise, and desiring to walk in all the ordinances and commandments of the Lord, blameless, do hereby form ourselves into a Christian Church, under the name of the Unitarian Church of Syracuse.  We agree and covenant with each other as in the presence of Almighty God, to continue in the Fellowship of this Church, in a regular attendance on Christian ordinances, in the exercise of Christian affection, in the maintenance of Christian liberty, in the pursuit of Christian truth, so long and so far as shall appear to us to be our duty.

The following names are facsimile copies which are affixed to the original draft of the church covenant as written above:         Rev. John P. B. Storer, 1840-1844

                        Rev. Samuel J. May, 1845-1869

                        Rev. Samuel R. Calthrop, 1868-

Dedicated Nov. 23, 1843

Rededicated Apr. 11, 1853

1884:  This church is on the corner of Lock & Burnet Sts. in Syracuse.  Owing to the proximity to the “West Shore” Railroad, a new church is being built on James St.  It is to be known as the May Memorial Church.

1885:  Oct. 20 – dedication.  The Unitarian Cong. Church Soc. in Syracuse, N.Y. – May Memorial Church.  Rev. Samuel R. Calthrop, pastor.  We the undersigned of the May Mem. church, recognizing the great truths for which it has always stood, do here affix our names along with those of its members of other days, in token that we desire to do all in our power to help its future to be worthy of its honored past.
