Beginning in 1947 as the American Foundation for Political
Education [AFPE], this organization developed liberal education materials for
study-discussion programs focused on politics, law and international affairs;
helped organizations, agencies, and institutions through consultation, program
development, and leadership training; and prepared special materials on liberal
arts and politics for business and industry.
In the late 1950's the Foundation's subject interests, publications, and
clientele grew and encompassed the fields of economics, science, the arts, and
the humanities, thus prompting its name to change to the American Foundation
for Continuing Education [AFCE]. The
Foundation garnered financial support largely by grants from the Fund for Adult
Education [FAE], as well as participant’s fees and service charges. The Foundation ended most of its activities
other than publications and revisions in 1965.

{7:32:97:I:0,0:2544,3300} AMERICAN FOUNDATION FOR CONTINUING
EDUCATION, 1947-1965 PAPERS,
1947-1965 38 boxes (19 linear feet)
Background Sketch The American
Foundation for Continuing Education (AFCE) was originally founded as the
American Foundation for Political Education in 1947 to develop materials of
liberal education-- particularly in politics, law, and international affairs
for the use of adults in study-discussion programs; to help organizations,
agencies, and institutions through consultation, program development, and
leadership training; and to prepare special materials on liberal arts and
politics for business and industry. From 1951 through 1965, its main financial
support, in addition to participants' fees and service charges to clients, came
from the Fund for Adult Education. In the late 1950's the Foundation broadened
its interests in subject matter, publications, and clientele to include areas
such as economics, science, the arts, and humanities. Accordingly, it then took the name of the American Foundation for
Continuing Education. The AFCE ended most of its activities other than
publication and revisions in 1965. However, some of its publications remain available
through Publications in Continuing Education, Syracuse University. The shelf list of the AFPE/AFCE contains too
many cross-references to other organizations and individuals in the Continuing
Education collections at Syracuse University to cite in summary.
